Celebration was in the air when leadership, faculty and staff gathered to commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Center for Faculty Development & Diversity (CFDD) June 2 in the Shapiro Breakout Room.
“The Center for Faculty Development and Diversity has had a very successful first five years, and we look forward to continued growth over the next five years and beyond,” said BWH President Betsy Nabel, MD. “Faculty diversity and development are integral to BWH’s mission of transforming the future of health care through science, education, compassionate care and community engagement.”
It was a time of reflection for those in attendance, who recalled that the center—which now serves as the umbrella organization for the Office for Women’s Careers, the Office for Multicultural Faculty Careers and the Office for Research Careers—did not always offer the robust agenda of programs and initiatives it now provides.
“In the beginning, we met weekly to decide where to place our efforts, whether it was a request for assistance with CVs, or launching Internet and intranet sites,” recounted Barbara Bierer, MD, senior vice president of Research and director of the CFDD. “Today, as one central organization that focuses on recruiting, retaining and supporting the careers of a diverse faculty and training community, we have implemented a number of programs and initiatives, focusing on everything from programs for underrepresented minority college students to a 10-month leadership program for BWH physicians and scientists. Mind you, we still meet weekly!”
Among the CFDD’s programs that are going strong today are the Brigham Leadership Program, the BWH Summer Training in Academic Research and Scholarship (STARS) Program, Four Directions Summer Research Program, the Research Leadership Program and the Faculty Mentoring Leadership Program.
“Our success is due to a collective effort from staff and faculty,” CFDD Executive Director Audrey Haas, MBA, told representatives from all five programs as she presented them with gift baskets in appreciation of their contributions. “Thank you for your help in providing resources to support our key populations through strong programs, guidance, resources, advocacy and outreach.”
The CFDD was designed and created in 2006 under the leadership of Bierer and former BWH Chief Medical Officer Andy Whittemore, MD, who served as co-director through 2010. Whittemore and Mary B. Clark, MD, former assistant dean for faculty affairs at Harvard Medical School, were both acknowledged at the celebration for their contributions to the CFDD.
In addition to acknowledging the growth and achievements of the CFDD, the celebration also included a presentation of three awards. Zara Cooper, MD, and Robert Riviello, MD, MPH, accepted the Faculty Career Development Award. Corrina M. Oxford, MD, and David A. Walton, MD, MPH, accepted the Minority Faculty Career Development Award, and Rolf Stottmann, PhD, received the Office for Research Careers Peer Mentor Award.
Before the celebration concluded with a champagne toast, Bierer and her colleagues unveiled the CFDD 5th Anniversary Report, which offers details about CFDD programming, lists of achievements, a breakdown of BWH faculty and fellows data and goals for the years ahead.
